Derek died suddenly in a motor vehicle accident in Lincolnshire, England on 23rd August 2011. Although he lived in British Columbia he returned to England regularly doing the work he loved as a business consultant and advisor to a number of Christian missions. He was able to share his enthusiasm with his wife and son back in Canada one hour before his death.
He was the much loved husband of Fiona and father of Elizabeth, Sarah and Nathaniel and grandfather to Joshua, stepfather to Malcolm, Elspeth, Jonathan and Iain. He was a very dear brother to Eileen (late Bob) Thompson and June (Gerald) Denton and will be sadly missed by his many nephews and nieces and great nephews and nieces in England and Canada who will be at a loss to whom to turn to for his kind, wise advice. He was predeceased by his first wife Janet and daughter Rachel.
Derek was born in Marston, Bedfordshire in 1941. He grew up in a close family in that community coping with the physical impediments of a birth injury with characteristic resilience: he simply ignored it. After school he quickly saw limited job opportunities and trained as an accountant in his spare time, using his skills not only to progress in his career but to supply endless help to other with their business needs, to church and missionary organisations and to those in need. Derek was always concerned for others and was a wise confidante to many whilst skilfully avoiding the spotlight on himself. He was always cheerful and uplifting to others whilst bearing his own struggles including first the death of his daughter at birth and then the loss of his wife with fortitude. The adoption of his three children brought him great joy and he was a devoted father and enthusiastic grandfather to Joshua.
Since immigrating to Canada 10 years ago following his second marriage to Fiona he followed the same practice, continuing to work and help others. His Christian faith remained his enduring raison d’être.
Thanksgiving service will be at Emmanuel Baptist Church, in Vernon on September 10 at 11:00 AM. Instead of flowers, donations to one of Derek’s favourite charities either the Chinese Overseas Christian Mission or Samaritans Purse would be appreciated.
