Derek passed away in Kelowna on December 21, 2008 at the age of 83 years. He was born May 26, 1925 in Bristol, England. He is survived by his wife Peggy of 58 years, a brother Tony (Joan) in England, four daughters Jennifer (Rick), Diane (Kevin), Pauline (Terry) and Barbara; also four grandsons Christopher (Sylvia), Derek (Jill), Jordon and Joel and 3 great grandsons Michael, Terry and Anthony.
Derek grew up in Bristol and Weston-Super-Mare and enlisted in the British Royal Navy when he was 18. He served on a destroyer with the Pacific Royal fleet mostly in the South Pacific. After the war he immigrated to Canada in 1947 to join his Uncle who had established an apple orchard 25 years earlier. . Derek became a proud Canadian on February 13th, 1963.
Derek settled in Oyama enjoying rural life and Community activities. He was a founding member of the Oyama Emergency Committee which eventually became the Oyama Volunteer Fire Department and was an active volunteer fireman for 20 years serving in many capacities including as Fire Chief. He worked as a Federal Fruit and Vegetable Inspector from 1959 to1987 in the Oyama, Vernon and Winfield areas.
Derek was an active member of Oyama Branch #189 of the Royal Canadian Legion since March 1947, working at local, zone, provincial, national and international levels. He was honoured to receive the Meritorious Service Medal, a Palm Leaf and a Life Membership; these three awards are the Legions highest honours.
Derek lived through life changing experiences during WWII and his naval service. He carried those memories with him all his life. In addition to the Legion, Derek was passionate about collecting stamps. and was an outstanding orchardist and gardener, He was a hard working, caring family man, with a gentle sense of humour and a generous spirit.
Derek lived in Oyama for over 60 years on land owned by his family for 88 years until moving to Kelowna in 2007. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Poppy Fund at the Oyama Legion. A Remembrance Gathering will be held at Oyama Legion Sunday Dec 28th at 2pm. Private Family Burial at a later date.
