Don Merritt died peacefully on Saturday, May 10, 2003. He is survived by his daughters; Maureen Leonhardt (Dan) of Calgary, Alberta, Judi Worthington (Garry) from Kingman, Alberta; grandchildren Kari Bloom (Gordon), Jason Leonhardt, Mindi Chadwick (Bryce), Katie Poudrier (David), and Gary Lee Merritt Worthington (Alice), all from Alberta; and by great-grandchildren, Craig, Ryan, and Kristen Bloom and Tayelle Chadwick. His sister Helen Hodgson, cousin Paul and Peggy Stickney, and brother-in-law and sister-in laws, Betty and Charlie Pierce, Len and Winona Donaldson and Tom Donaldson will fondly remember Don.
Don was pre-deceased by his wife of 62 years, Celia, three children in infancy and by numerous brothers and sisters.
Don was Secretary-Treasurer of the Municipal District of Starland in central Alberta for 35 years. He was valued by friends and colleagues as a dependable financial administrator and as someone to turn to in time of need.
Don and Celia came to Vernon in 1979 and quickly made many friends. He enjoyed golf, playing bridge, meeting his cronies for coffee and being a congenial host.
Perseverance, resilience, responsibility, generosity and a genuine interest in people were characteristics that defined Don, and the ripples of his character will last for generations. A Celebration of Don’s life was held three weeks ago in honour of his 90th birthday. His entire family, close relatives and friends were in attendance. We will all cherish the memory of his loving acknowledgment to our toast to this very special man. A private family service will be held at a later time.
