Donald Gary (Don) Butler
passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 18th, 2008 at Hospice House in Vernon, B.C. at the age of 69 years, with his loving wife at his side. Born and raised in Victoria, B.C., he was the son of the late Ernest and Louise May Butler.
Don will be lovingly remembered by his wife Debbra of Vernon, B.C.; two daughters, Natalie (Josh) Cooksley of Calgary, Alberta and Kristine (Joe) Landolt of Halifax, Nova Scotia; four grandchildren, Noah, Emily, Nicholas and William; one step-son, Daniel Moody of Vancouver, B.C.; two sisters, Barbara (Mike) Weston and Christine (Gerry) Williams of Victoria, B.C.; one brother, Brian Butler of Grand Cayman Islands and several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Don was a highly involved member of the land development and construction community. He started in his chosen career in land development in the early 1960s, developing and building subdivisions, homes, apartments and condominiums. He then moved his family to the Grand Cayman Islands in 1974 where he focused on condominium developments of Seven Mile Beach. Since moving back to B.C. in 1986, Don was actively involved in a number of residential and commercial projects on Vancouver Island and, over the past eight years, in Vernon, B.C. While Don received much recognition for his projects over the years, he was very honored and proud to receive multiple awards through the HBA, including the “Best Environmental Project for 2003” for Whisper Ridge in Coldstream.
Don thought big, played big and worked hard: although he would argue that work and play were often one and the same. He had many hobbies and among the top favorites were sailing, airplane building, fast and exotic cars and re-building just about anything. Outside of his many passions, Don was a loving husband, caring father, proud grandfather, great brother, devoted friend to many and a well respected businessman. He cherished his family and always looked forward to family updates and times together. Don will be greatly missed and forever remembered.
Cremation preceded a Celebration Of Don’s Life which will be held at the Vernon Yacht Club, 7919 Okanagan Landing Road, Vernon, B.C. on Thursday, May 29th, 2008 from 12 noon – 3:00 P.M.
