April 17, 2020
Donald Kenneth Herbert passed away in his sleep on April 17, 2020 at The Hamlets in Vernon, B.C. at the age of 94.
He was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Barbara (Meyerhoffer), who died in 2015, four of his siblings: his twin, Edwin, his sisters Evelyn Green, Florence Dean, and Doris Hovey as well as his daughter, Donna K. Madsen and grandson, Michael Madsen. He is survived by his daughter, Diane Mortensen (Klaus) of Salt Spring Island, grandaughter, Shelley Johnston (Todd) of Calgary and two great-grandsons, Blair and Alix Johnston, many nieces and nephews in Canada and the U.S.
Don was fortunate to have been blessed with excellent health until his final two years. He continued to drive until he was 93, often hundreds of kilometers to visit friends and family. He was a jack-of-all-trades who could turn his hand to almost anything. Don criss-crossed the prairies with his family where he worked as a farmer, coal miner, truck driver, and millwright, wherever he could find work, until retiring at Celista and eventually Vernon.
He was always there for friends and neighbours with whatever help and advice they needed and maintained strong friendships with them over the years. They will sadly miss him and his often corny jokes. Many thanks to everyone who helped him in his final months, particularly his friends in Graceland, Dale and Lesley Clark, Dr. Hayward and Anna Schlichting.
At his request, there will be no service. In death as in life, he asked that no fuss be made over him. If you wish to make a donation, he would have appreciated it going to Vernon Jubilee Hospital.
