Donald Wesley Purdy

April 28, 1930 – December 20, 2014

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Donald W. Purdy in Vernon, BC. He was born in a farmhouse in Abernethy, SK. Don is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Marguerite, and daughters/sons: Donna Ann of Victoria, BC, Mark of Victoria, BC, Leslie of Saskatoon, SK, Kim of Campbell River, BC, and Jennifer of Gatineau, PQ.

In Don’s early working career, he fired locomotives for the CPR in the east and west Kootenays until the arrival of diesels. Firing steamers was his favourite passion that continued on through his life. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1954 and continued working with steam propulsion. Don was commissioned in 1969, served as the Engineering Officer in HMCS GATINEAU 1976 to 1979 and retired as Lieutenant (N) in 1985. After retirement, Marge and Don moved to the 108 Mile Ranch in the Cariboo where he enjoyed marmot shooting and cross country skiing with his dog Heidi. He was an ardent pool player and gunsmith. Even after his move to Vernon in 1991, he made yearly trips to search out the wily marmot in the Cariboo. Marge and Don made many enjoyable trips to Vegas, Reno, and Wendover.

The Purdy Family would like to thank the staff at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital (3 North) and Gateby (2nd floor). Special thanks also goes to Dr. Lindsay Pritchett, Dr. Abdel-Kader, and great friends and shipmate Dan Lorimer. In lieu of flowers, donation to the Salvation Army ( will be appreciated.
