Dorothy Barton


Dorothy Barton passed away peacefully with her husband, family and mother Nellie Jackson, at her side on July 14, 2004 at Vernon Jubilee Hospital following a short, intense battle, with cancer.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday afternoon at 2 pm, July 23rd, 2004 at Pleasant Valley Funeral Home. Rev Arthur Gans Officiating.

Born in Erickson, Manitoba on November 20, 1942, Dorothy moved to Richmond in 1947, where she attended school, grew up and obtained employment with the St. John Ambulance Society and subsequently with the Health Department, Municipality of Richmond.

Dorothy met and married Ken Barton on May 16th, 1964 after a two year courtship. Ken being employed in the banking industry, there followed numerous transfers around the Province of British Columbia and Yukon Territory, in each community of which many long lasting friendships were made.

Upon transfer in 1986 to Vernon, BC. Dorothy stated to Ken “This is it, no more transfers”. A very happy eighteen years has been spent in this community, where many steadfast friendships have bee made. Friends and Family have been the cornerstones of Dorothy’s life. Quilting became her passion. She built a “stash” to rival any. Dorothy also enjoyed working alongside Ken in volunteering, for Silver Star Rotary and Allan Brooks Nature Center.

Dorothy leaves her loving family, husband of 40 years Ken, son Stephen and his wife Joy with the three grandchildren Seth, Jonathan and Joel; eldest daughter Krista Barton; youngest daughter Sheri Barton and soon (August 28) husband-to-be Russell Wilson; her mother Nellie Hazel Jackson; her Aunt Hazel and Uncle Joe Oracheski of Edmonton and cousin Elaine Scott (nee Oracheski); her Mother-in-law Jennie Barton (of Goathland, Yorkshire, England) and brothers-in-law Ben Barton, Bruce Barton and Roy Barton (all of England) and Sister-in-law Heather Stone of Russel, New Zealand; and a number of in-law nephews and nieces. Dorothy was an only child, predeceased by her father John Granville Jackson and Father-in-law, Harold Barton (Goathland, England).

Cremation and Celebration of Life arrangements are in the care of Pleasant Valley Funeral Home, Vernon, BC 542-0155.

A tea will follow the service, prepared by Dorothy’s Quilting and Rotary friends.
