DOROTHY MAY GOWER passed away peacefully at her home in Vernon on June 6, 2003, at the age of 77 years. Dot was born on March 5, 1926 in Rossland, B.C. After high school graduation there, she helped her parents run the Forbidden Plateau Lodge on Vancouver Island. Dot later travelled North America during an illustrious career with the WRNS, rising to become the youngest Lt. Commander and highest ranking woman in the Canadian Navy. Upon retirement, she moved to Vernon and served for twelve years with the Provincial Emergency Programme, enjoyed bridge with good friends, and perfecting her golf game at the Vernon Golf and Country Club and at courses around the world. Dot was predeceased by her parents, John Hastings Gower and Amelia Newson Gower; her brother Terence Gower, former Vernon architect; and her sister, Kathleen Gower Andrews, artist. Much beloved by her cousins, nieces, nephews, and their families in Vancouver, Summerland, Nelson, Victoria, New York, Mexico and England, and by good friends from her golf, bridge and navel circles around the continent. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. James’ Roman Catholic Church in Vernon on Friday, June 13, at 10:00 A.M.
