August 6, 1933 - February 12, 2021
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Douglas Neil MacNicol at Hospice House in Vernon, BC at the age of 87 years. Doug was born in 1933 in Kaslo, BC and spent his childhood on the family farm in Johnston's Landing, north of Kaslo. He was the youngest in a large family of 6 brothers and 5 sisters.
Doug enlisted in the RCAF in 1953 and was overseas for a few years before coming back to Canada. He settled in Castlegar for about 10 years after obtaining his millwright ticket but he eventually relocated to Vernon and started work at the "plywood plant" in Armstrong that he actually helped to build. After working there for several years he retired. He later moved out to Lumby where he spent many happy hours puttering in his garden which he loved before settling again in Vernon to spend the rest of his retirement years.
Doug is survived by his beloved wife of 19 years, Patricia, his sister-in-law Arlene (Roy) and brother-in-law John. He is also survived by his first wife, Sylvia, his 3 children Dawne (Dave), Doug (Lavi) and Bill (Rachel) together with his grandchildren: Chelsea (Jordan), Ashley (Jesse) and Doug (Kenzie), Shaylene, Levi and Ian.
He is predeceased by his father William and mother Georgina, his brothers Donald, Jim, Jack, Bert, Bruce and Larry and his sisters, Margaret, Neil, Florence, Jean and Pat.
There really was nothing Doug liked better then enjoying a cold beverage and telling a good joke. You always knew where Doug was just by following his huge laugh.
The family wishes to extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all the staff at Hospice House for their special care and attention given to him in his final days. The family would also like to thank all the staff at Heron Grove as well for their care of Dad during his stay there. A small memorial will be held for Doug on Kootenay Lake sometime this summer.
