Dr. Lois Elaine Philp
(March 2, 1932 – August 23, 2013)
It is with great love and much sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Lois Philp (née Dunlop). She will be affectionately remembered by her husband, Dr. Ian Philp; her five children: Doug (Lisa) Demetrick, Dana (Tony) Sammartino, Craig (Sherry) Demetrick, Jeff (Alison) Demetrick, and Jamie (Allison) Demetrick; and her eleven grandchildren: Lisa (Anthony), Mia, Melanie, Selina, Alessandra, Rachelle, Laurel, Nicholas, Amy, Aidan and Ginger, step-grandson Luke and many nieces and nephews. She will also be greatly missed by a herd of friends, two and four legged.
Lois was born in Roblin, Manitoba to Andrew and Rachel Dunlop. She spent her childhood years in Ontario, eventually moving to Kelowna as a teenager. She graduated from UBC in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. Lois then went on to earn her degree as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Guelph, where she was one of the first women to be accepted. After graduation, Lois and her first husband, Dr. Vic Demetrick, moved their growing family west, settling in Coldstream, in 1964. She began breeding and raising thoroughbred race horses and dogs, and became a well-known equine enthusiast. Following her marriage to Ian, and with his love and support, she started Crossrail Farm, expanding her animal farming to include Welsh ponies and Jack Russell Terriers.
Lois lived her passions, followed her principles, and made the world a better place for those who knew her, and many who didn’t. She was a strong advocate for the rights of women, the elderly and animals.
Lois was instrumental in the community, serving on the Boards for the Women’s Transition House, the Vernon Fish and Game Club, the Vernon Agricultural Society (Kin Race Track), and the Vernon District Riding Club.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Vernon District Riding Club (8408 Aberdeen Rd), on Wednesday August 28, 2013 at 2 pm. Family and friends are invited to come with fond memories and stories to share. It will be an outdoor service where pets are welcome. In lieu of flowers please send donations to a charity of your choice, such as New Stride Thoroughbred Rescue (17687 56 A Ave, Surrey BC, V3S 1G4), the VDRC (c/o 7456 Pleasant Valley Rd, Vernon BC, V1B 3R6) , or the Women’s Transition House (Box 625, Vernon BC, V1T 6M6).
