December 23, 1945 - May 26, 2016

Early on May 26, 2016, we lost a very special person. Duane will be loving missed by his wife Gail, of 45 years, his sister Corrine (Len Youngblut), brothers Clifford (Mary) and Allan (Sylvia), sister-in-law Carole, as well as his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Albert and Hilda, brothers Henry, Clarence and Les and his sisters Mabel, Violet and Doris.

Duane is also survived by his two fur babies Maggie and Buster, special friends Doug and Erica, and Le and Anne, as well as his best friend John Tung. John is a huge part of the family and with his help and support, Duane was able to remain at home through his illness over the last few months.

Duane grew up on a small farm in Mowbray, MB until his parents moved to Winnipeg when he was 10 years old. Duane developed his love of hockey at an early age and soon became a star player. He also tried his hand at a variety of jobs, always willing to learn new things. Winnipeg is also where he met and married Gail, and the two of them moved to Vernon in 1976, where he eventually found his forte in painting. He started his own business, “The Painter” Duane Swayze.

He was hardworking, extended kindness to everyone he met and always went the extra mile for his friends and customers.

Duane had a zest for life and his sharp wit and humour was enjoyed by all. He cherished time with friends and family and enjoyed playing his guitar and making people laugh. Travelling and refereeing for the BC Broomball Association was a passion of his, and he rarely missed a Vernon Vipers game. His absence will leave a deep void in many lives.

Special thanks and appreciation is extended to

Dr. D. Arnold and his staff.

As per Duane’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services.

If desired, friends may make donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the B.C. Cancer Foundation.
