Edgar Hampton Dobie, a lifelong resident of Vernon, passed away on Monday evening,
October 9, of a heart attack while visiting
relatives in Winnipeg for the Thanksgiving Day
Mr. Dobie was born at Vernon Jubilee Hospital on January 15, 1922. He graduated from Vernon Secondary High School, then chose auto mechanics as his vocation. When World War Two broke out, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, became an airframe mechanic and served in England, Holland and France.
In 1951 Mr. Dobie was married to the
former Connie Smith. Longtime residents
of the Bella Vista district, they had five sons – Donald, Michael and Roger of Vernon,
David of Winnipeg and Edgar Jr. of
Providence, Rhode Island.
An avid sportsman, Edgar played hockey, baseball and lacrosse as a youngster and after the war he curled and golfed. A
member of the Spallumcheen Golf and Country Club, he played regularly and, in fact, went golfing in Winnipeg on the last day of his life. Besides sports where he picked up the nickname Red at an early
age, he was active in community service as a volunteer and board member at the Schubert Center for Seniors, and Venture Training and an officer of the Knights of Pythias Coldstream Lodge No. 18.
A memorial service and reception will be
held on Monday, Oct. 16 at 2:30 p.m.
at the Schubert Center.
