Edgerton “Ralph” Cooper
was born on July 18th, 1922 in Brandon, Manitoba and passed away peacefully on December 31st, 2008 at Vernon Hospice House at the age of 86 years. His entire family and many friends helped him on his way.
Ralph has gone to join his loving wife, Gert. They will celebrate their 60th Wedding Anniversary together in Heaven. Ralph will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Wendy (Gerry) Hennings of Kamloops, B.C. and Chris Cooper of Vernon, B.C.; his granddaughters, Kristy (Doug) and Kelly (Kirk); his great-granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Olive and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter & Matilda Cooper; three brothers, Ernie, Lloyd and Danny; and one sister, Ismay.
Ralph grew up in Brandon and joined the Army at the age of 16, served during World War II and came to Vernon following the war. Here he met Gert Jakeman and they were married on March 24th, 1949. Ralph worked for a while at Singer repairing sewing machines and then joined the Parts Department at Galbraiths and C.A.E. Morris. He and Gert enjoyed bowling, playing darts, dancing, camping and fishing. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #25 and the O.A.P.O. #6. One of Ralph’s greatest passions in life was his love of model railroading and he was a life member of the local club. He also loved skiing and could be seen coming down the ski hill, arms spread open, having fun and embracing life. In recent years Ralph and Gert could be seen walking every day at the Mall. When Gert passed away in April, Ralph continued meeting their friends at the Mall and was still bowling.
In respecting Ralph’s wishes, he was cremated and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Ralph to the North Okanagan Hospice Society, 3506-27th Avenue, Vernon, B.C. V1T 1S4.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff of Vernon Jubilee Hospital and Hospice House for the care and kindness shown to Ralph and us, his family, during the time of his illness.
