BERTHOLD EDWARD HALWAS
BERT passed away in the serenity of Noric House in the early morning on the 21st day of January, 2005. He was born in the Municipality Boulton, Manitoba on the 19th of October, 1926. In 1946 Bert traveled west to British Columbia, first working in the logging camps of Vancouver Island and then the fruit packing houses in the Winfield area were he met Helen Lidstone. In December of 1949 Bert and Helen were married. In the succeeding years, Bert logged, saw milled and farmed in the Lumby area until the late 1980’s. Bert will be remembered by his sons, Kenneth J. (Fran) Halwas, of Boswell BC; Leonard D. (Rosa) Halwas, of Kelowna, BC. Grandchildren, Penny (Joe) Philips of Grasmere, BC; Kirk Halwas of Fort McMurray, AB; James Halwas of Cranbrook, BC. Great Grandchildren, Tyler Philips, Baylee Philips and Carter Philips of Grasmere, BC. Brothers and Sisters; Freda Hertlein of Calgary, AB; Martha Hertlein of Langenburg, SK; Molly Zarn of Reston MB; Herb Halwas of Peachland, BC; Agnes Fieseler of Edmonton; Arthur Halwas of Inglis, MB; Anna Davis of Kamloops, BC; Dorothy Bechman of Edmonton, AB; Robert Halwas of Russel, MB; Lloyd Halwas of Merrit, BC and Ralph Halwas of Chemainus, BC. Sister in-law, Edna Eckert of Vernon, BC. Predeceased by his wife Helen in 1996. Brothers, Erwin, Lawrence and Fred. Sisters, Leona, Wilma and Ruth. In the later years some of Bert’s most joyful times were when he was dancing or playing cards and having coffee with his long time friends. In the last year he especially enjoyed the visits he received while at Noric House. Bert’s request was not to have a memorial service, his remains will be laid to rest next to his wife Helen’s in the Lumby Cemetery. “Life is a journey; it’s destination is eternal peace.” Bert has arrived at that destination.
