Sumner, Edward Melville (Mel)

Edward Melville (Mel) Sumner passed away suddenly at his home at Heron Grove on March 23, 2012 in Vernon, B.C. He loved life, his family, the world he lived in and his Lord. Mel was born in Victoria, December 30, 1920, moved as an infant to Duff, Sask. and then to Sexsmith, AB. in the Peace River District in 1928. As a teenager he went to Toronto to complete his education. He and Allison (nee Bentley) were married in 1942. They returned to the West in 1950 where he joined in the pioneering Propane Industry, serving in various capacities in Westlock, Prince George, Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver until 1976. He moved to Salt Spring Island where he served with B.C. Ferries in personnel work until his retirement in 1986. He was active in that community for 35 years and served on many Boards and Societies. He was always interested in the youth. Although he lost an eye as a child and a full leg to cancer late in life, he continued to golf and ski well into his eighties. Thanks goes out to the wonderful people of Vernon and Grace Bible Church who made his last two years of re-adjustment for him so easy. He will be dearly missed by his daughters Sharon (Dan) Bell and Colleen (Kevin) Edstrom; sons Murray (Kay) and Greg (Colleen); 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife Allison, to whom he was married for 62 years, and all his siblings: brothers Leonard and Hubert, and sister Eileen Kennedy. The family would be pleased to have you join in a farewell Celebration of Life at Grace Bible Church (5661 Silver Star Road Vernon, BC) on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at 11:00 A.M….not to grieve, but to bring a smile and share a few recollections. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mel’s honor to Salt Spring Island Foundation (Box 244 Ganges PO Salt Spring Island, B.C. V8K 2V9) or Meadowbrook Seniors Residence (121 Atkins Road Salt Spring Island, B.C. V8K 2X7).
