Eileen Evelyn Dempsey

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our loving wife, mother and grandmother who passed away peacefully on March 10th in the Vernon Jubilee Hospital after a lengthy illness. She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Fred, children Dan (Ruth) of Victoria, Deb (Arch) of Winnipeg, Bob (Michelle) of Barrie, Rick of Edmonton, Rachael (Craig) of Coldstream and daughter-in-law Wendy of Edmonton along with brothers Dale (Joan) of Winnipeg and Ray (Judy) of Belleville. She is also lovingly remembered by her grandchildren – Stephanie, Jason, Jamie, Jennifer, Raylene, Erin and James along with a host of nieces and nephews. Eileen was predeceased by her father and mother, Earl and Evelyn, brother Don and son Daryl.

Born in Milestone, Saskatchewan to humble prairie roots, Eileen was the first of four children born to Earl and Evelyn McClelland. As a young teenager she moved with her family to Regina in 1942 where they resided on Elphinstone and Retallack Streets prior to moving into 744 Rae Street, an address that in later years became synonymous with “Granny and Grandpa” when Eileen had her own children. She met the love of her life, Fred, in Calgary early in 1951. She married the young RCAF airman the following August and six happy children ensued in the years to come as the family moved from Hamilton to Ottawa, Calgary and finally Edmonton in 1964 where they spent the better part of four decades. These were wonderful years as the family dug deep roots in Edmonton, Eileen having worked at Sears for over 15 years. The long road trips by car of the 1950s and 60s to visit family soon gave way to air travel as Fred and Eileen flew far and wide across Canada and abroad to visit their children, including to Germany and Hong Kong. Their retirement home eventually became Vernon, a community they enjoyed very much. Mom always loved her little garden and flowers but for her the most important thing in life was her children and grandchildren, whom she cherished.

The family would like to thank Eileen’s doctors and the staff of the Vernon Jubilee Hospital who provided such excellent care to her during her visits over the past few years. We will always be grateful for your compassionate care.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, March 15th at 11:00 AM at Bethel Funeral Chapel Ltd., 5605 – 27 Street, Vernon. Interment of cremated remains to follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery. A reception in honour of Eileen’s long life will be held back at Bethel following interment. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Respiratory Department, 2101 – 32nd Street, Vernon, B.C. V1T 5L2.

To Mom

You were there for us all from the very start

A wonderful mother with a generous heart.

You carried yourself with humility and pride

with a beautiful smile you could never hide.

A lady and our hero you will always be

the one who lived with such dignity.

We miss you dearly and wish you were here

but then realize you will always be near.

For you are the sun that shines above,

you are the rainbows that we all love.

You are the breeze that gently blows past,

that beautiful butterfly we can almost grasp.

Thank you for the lessons you taught us all,

to always be brave and always stand tall.

Now you’re with God, you’ve stood the test.

Your pain is over – you’ve earned your rest.

Remember we love you and always will,

we only wish time could have stood still.

– In our hearts forever –

Love Dad, Dan, Deb, Bob, Rick & Rachael (Lynn)
