Elaine Holly, born Dec. 9, 1947, Vernon B.C., passed away at Delta Hospital, Ladner, BC on January 24, 2003 after a tenacious and dignified battle with cancer. Her parents Ollie and Ina Goldsmith, and her brother-in-law Bill Holmes predeceased Holly. She is sadly mourned and lovingly remembered by her husband, Warren Wager, sisters Donna Holmes and Elizabeth Abrahamsen (Abe) Vernon, B.C., four nieces, two nephews, numerous cousins, and special aunt Bea of Kelowna. Holly’s presence and spirit will be greatly missed by Warren’s children, Howard (Bonnie) Wager, Laurie (Rick) Dunbar, Janice (Jim) Wycherley and family and Leigh-Ann Wager (Eric Monte).
Holly enjoyed an idyllic childhood, growing up in Vernon and had fond memories of participating in the Vernon Girls’ Trumpet Band. After high school, she graduated from Royal Inland Hospital School of Nursing, Kamloops. Her early career took her to Powell River and Montreal. Following a move to Victoria, she completed a diploma in Public Sector Management and BSN at the University of Victoria. During this time, she demonstrated her ability to innovate programs while inspiring both colleagues and patients at both Victoria General Hospital and Fairfield sites.
In 1993, she was appointed General Manager of Arbutus Manor, a retirement community in Vancouver, a position she held until her illness became too much of a challenge. She continued to contribute her knowledge and expertise to the steering committee of the B.C. Retirement Communities Association.
Holly had a passion for life and the people she touched; as well as flowers, music and gardening. Holly’s courage and will for life during her battle with cancer brought all of her family, friends, colleagues and neighbours together to support and share their pride of her life. Holly will be sorely missed. A special thanks to all of her care team, especially Dr. Tom Martin, Della Roberts (Coordinator of Delta Palliative Care), Rev. Jim Short, the entire staff of Delta Hospital Medical Floor and special nurses Rhoda, Sally, and Bonnie. Friends Carole Edwards, Dorothy Parker, Bonnie Davoren and Joan Scott were wonderfully compassionate and helpful during Holly’s journey.
To celebrate Holly’s life, a memorial service will be held at 2p.m. on February 1, 2003 at All Saints Anglican Church, 4755 Arthur Dr., Delta, B.C. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Delta Hospice Society, Box 18036, Tsawwassen Outlet, Delta, B.C. V4L 2M4.
