Elizabeth (BETH) Markson
June 28, 1930 – January 2, 2015
Beth was born to Lily and George Menary in Torquay, Devon England, a middle child with 4 siblings. After graduating from school, Beth volunteered with the British Land Army and it was during this time she met and married Brian Markson in August, 1950. They had 2 sons, Greg in 1952 and Andrew in 1954. In 1962 the small family immigrated to Canada and 2 girls joined their family. Sharon in 1963 and Doreen in 1964. They chose Goderich, Ontario to raise their family and opened a family business called “The Coach House Travel Service”. Beth and Brian were active members of the small community and could be found performing with the Goderich Little Theatre or singing in the local church. In 1979 they decided to pick up roots and move west to the Okanagan Valley. First to Vernon, then Penticton, and then Kelowna. Beth continued her career in the travel industry until her retirement. Following Brian’s death in 1993, Beth moved back to Vernon. Beth volunteered her time making and repairing costumes for the Powerhouse Theatre and Okanagan Landing School plays. She knitted baby caps for the nursery at Vernon Jubilee Hospital and the Salvation Army. She loved to knit and any new baby in the family was welcomed with a knitted coat, bonnet and booties.
She was predeceased by her Mom and Dad, her siblings and her husband. She is survived by her sons Greg (Cynthia) Markson, and Andy (Sue) Markson, daughters Sharon Markson (Steve), and Doreen (Scott) Fochler, as well as 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Those wishing to do so may make donations, in memory of Beth, to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the BC Cancer Agency.
Cremation preceded a graveside service that will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2015 1:30pm at Pleasant Valley Cemetery. A Celebration of Beth’s life will be held at a later date.
