Elizabeth Neilson

Beth passed away on June 6, 2010 after a full and happy life. She was the second daughter of Bishop and Mrs. A.H. Sovereign, and was predeceased by her husband, John (Jack) Neilson, her sisters Ellie Wood and Mary Oyler, and her brother Art Sovereign.

Beth’s love, kindness and support was a constant in the lives of her family and friends. She was dearly loved and will be sadly missed by her children and their partners, Kathy Neilson and Bill Hopkins of Vancouver, John and Pat Neilson of Vernon, and Barbara and Jim Bay of Revelstoke; her cherished granddaughters, Christine and Monica Neilson and Riley and Ellie Bay; and her extended family and many friends.

Beth was born in Vancouver on March 27, 1918 and grew up in Kitsilano, Dawson City, Yukon, and Peace River, Alberta. She graduated from the University of Alberta with her B.A. in 1939, and received her Diploma in Teacher Training from U.B.C. in 1940. She taught in White Rock and Kelowna before marrying Jack in 1947 in All Saints’ Church in Vernon. Jack’s career in dentistry took them to Edmonton, Seattle and Winnipeg before their retirement to Vernon in 1983.

Beth gave her time generously to her family and friends, and served her community through many volunteer activities. She loved the outdoors and was an excellent athlete. She was actively engaged in a wide range of activities throughout her life, and was an inspiration to many.

The family would like to thank all who supported her through her final brief illness, particularly her dear friend Basil Edwards.
