Elizabeth (Liza)

Elizabeth (Liza) Anne Shippam passed away quietly in the Vernon Jubilee Hospital, surrounded by her immediate family, after losing her four year battle with cancer, Thursday, January 13, 2011 at the age of 70. She is survived by her husband, John; daughter, Kim (Aaron) Nasipayko and grandson, Elijah Nasipayko. She will be sorely missed by cousins: Margorie Henn and Sarah Freeman along with countless in-laws and friends. She will also be remembered fondly by many of her colleagues and past students. Liza was predeceased by her mother, Isabel Perry; father, Judd Perry; aunts: Euphemia, Margaret and Marion, and uncle, John McNaught. Liza was born in Beaverlodge, Alberta, on April 6th, 1940 where she was raised on the family farm. As an only child Liza enjoyed many pets and animals. This is where her life long love of horses was cultivated.  Liza went to university in Missoula, Montana, to train as a school teacher and spent most of her 34 years teaching in the Vernon School District, retiring 12 years ago.  Liza participated in many community groups and volunteer organizations including Vernon District Pony Club, Vernon District Riding Club, Vernon Ski Club, Vernon and District Performing Arts Center and Vernon Communities In Bloom Committee. She enjoyed many activities including traveling, book club, her birthday luncheon group, and horseback riding in the mountains around Vernon and the Kakwa Provincial Park area. Anyone who knew Liza, admired her incredible zest for life and desire to do things for others. She never let anything get her down, always answering when asked how she was, “Oh, I’m fine, how about you?” She always had a positive  opinion to share and was wise beyond her years, teaching so many people how to be accepting and calm no matter what the situation, often saying, “Its not what you say, it’s how you make people feel that counts.” She was truly an exceptional human being, putting other people first, right up until the day she went into the hospital. A Memorial Service will be held at Vernon Christian Fellowship (4505 29th Street Vernon, BC) Monday, January 17, 2011,  at 2:00 pm.  Those wishing to do so may make a memorial donation in Liza’s memory to McNaught Homestead Preserveration Society, Box 879, Beaverlodge, Alberta T0H 0C0. A Memorial Service will be held in Beaverlodge, AB at a later date. Details to follow. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family at: vernon@myalternatives.ca
