Elizabeth “Bessie” in her 90th year, slipped quietly away from us at Hospice House on May 28, 2003, after a long struggle with complications of heart disease and osteoporosis. She retained her sense of humour and cheekiness to the end. She loved people and was known primarily for her feisty sense of humour. She was a social animal with many friends, though many have predeceased her. Bessie was born in Greenock, Scotland where she met and married her 1st husband, “Big Jim” MacGillivray. they immigrated to Canada in 1948, settling in Vernon where they opened the White Heather Bakery, after time spent in Armstrong, Kamloops and most memorable, Alert Bay. In Alert bay she met John Voorsmith who was to become her 2nd husband in 1968. They have resided in Vernon since, except for a brief stint in White Rock. Life has been full with summers at the Lake, frequent visits to Maureen at the coast, or getaways to Reno as will as a couple of trips home to Scotland and Holland and others through Canada and the USA. Bessie is survived by her loving husband John, son Jim (Betty) MacGillivray, daughter Maureen (Gary) Marko, grandchildren, Lori Marko, Brad Marko, Kevin (Lianna) MacGillivray, Kelly (David) Scott, great grandchildren Caelum & Rhiana Scott, Riley MacGillivray, as well as relatives in Scotland. She was predeceased by: 1st husband Jim MacGillivray, sister Peggy Caithness, brothers, John and Neil Smith. A Celebration of Life will be held in the Schubert Centre banquet room on Wednesday, June 4, 2003, from 2-4pm.
