Elizabether Shirra Main

Shirra passed away, after a brief illness, with her family by her side Friday evening. She was a very special wife, mom, grandma, sister, aunt, and friend and will be deeply missed by her husband of 47 years Doug; daughters Karin of Enderby and Lori (Rod) of Lethbridge; sons Brian (Michelle) of Kelowna and Gordon (Heather) of Langley; her grandchildren Tristin, Kaira, Kali, Joshua, Adam, Ben and Jake; and brother Grant (Barb) of Edmonton. She will also be missed by many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends. Shirra was pre-deceased by her brother Gerry in 2007.

Shirra began her long teaching career in Prince Rupert in 1960 where she taught at Roosevelt Park and Seal Cove Elementaries. Shirra and Doug were married in 1962 and in 1968 the family moved to Enderby. Shirra returned to teaching in 1978 when all her children were in school. She taught at both Ashton Creek and M.V. Beattie schools until her retirement in 2003. Teaching, family, and community were Shirra’s passions.

The neighborhood children always knew they would be welcomed by Shirra at the Mainstay. She loved to be around people and learn new things, which were always a part of the many Main family summer vacations, spent camping and travelling across Canada to explore and visit family and friends. After her retirement, she took time to travel with Doug in their “bus,” but most of her time was spent with her grandchildren and working in the community, including many hours dedicated to Family Place and the Food Bank. She was a shining example of dedicating one’s life to others.

A memorial service will be held at M.V. Beattie Elementary School North Gym in Enderby, BC on Saturday January 16, 2010, at 2:00 PM. To honour Shirra’s favourite colour, the family would appreciate it if you wore something blue.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St Andrew’s United Church, or to the Canadian Cancer Society. Condolence messages may be emailed to the family at pafsarmstrong@telus.net.
