Elsie Reid died peacefully in her sleep at Creekside Landing care facility on May 14th 2017 at the age of 100.

Mom was born in Stony Plain, Alberta on November 25th 1916. Her grandparents and parents had emigrated there from the Province of Galicia (then Austria, now Poland) about 1903. By 1919 the entire family had moved to Vernon to escape the severe winters.

She married Joseph Gabriel in Vernon in 1934 and was the mother of two daughters. She never worked, but as a homemaker tended a huge garden every year and preserved her own produce. When Dad became a successful builder, she learned to keep books and assisted him with his considerable payroll.

After Dad’s death, she married Art Reid in 1979. They had 20 years together, travelling across Canada, to the States, Costa Rica and Mexico.

She was predeceased by her parents Jacob and Elizabeth Fuhr, two sisters Katherine and Caroline, brother Philip; first husband Joseph Gabriel in 1976; second husband Arthur Reid in 1999; grandson Vince Hurst in 2012 and granddaughter Leslie Hughes in 2017.

She is survived by her daughters Terry Hurst and Annie (Mike) Hancock; grandchildren Val Galbraith and Rod (Carm) Hurst; great-grandchildren Mandy, Aly, Ashley, Vanessa, Celina, Ryan, and Chloe; one great-grandson Anson; and the extended families of both marriages.

Sincere thanks to the complex care staff at Creekside Landing for making Mom’s final year easier for all concerned. Particular thanks to Christian Sjonnesen, music therapist, who made Mom’s Tuesdays, Fridays, and her 100th Birthday very special indeed.
