In Loving Memory ~
"IT IS TIME TO SAY GOODBYE"
Emmy is happy to be with her Lord and is finally home after moving 33 times here on earth. She was born in the German colony of Borodino, Bessarabia on April 15th, 1935 to Otto and Regina Stickel. The second of eight children, she made her first long trip after WWII started in 1940, living for nearly two years in refugee camps until her family settled on a farm in West Prussia (now Poland).
In January of 1945, Russian troops advanced and took over. With the most necessary things, the Stickel family fled over the frozen Weichsel River and then walked toward the West. The family survived many hardships until American and English troops occupied the area that later became West Germany and the war was finally over.
While in West Germany, Emmy chose to study Home Economics for Women in Landwirtschaft. Her studies included learning about animals, gardening, childcare, home care for seniors and childbirth at home.
In 1957, she immigrated to Canada, initially working on a sugar beet farm. She then worked in different occupations including mental health, being a nanny, teaching English to immigrant children, and bar tending in mining towns.
A little later in life while recognizing her entrepreneurial spirit, Emmy embarked on her most favored profession. She built her own business and independently ran the Falcon Nest Bed & Breakfast in Vernon. From beginning to end, she so enjoyed welcoming people from all walks of life from all over the world.
As a businesswoman, she loved being part of Women in Business, the Chamber of Commerce, Toastmasters, the Private Senior Care Association, and the Bed & Breakfast Association. In retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at Gleaners and surrounded herself with family, friends, and flowers at her home.
As Emmy traveled through life, she developed lasting relationships wherever she went. She loved her family and her many friends. Emmy was passionate about artwork, sewing, cooking, nature, and gardening. She particularly loved yellow flowers.
With her no nonsense attitude, she viewed the world through the lens of common sense, hard work, and helping others. Her faith in the Almighty saw her through many trials. She was grateful for the many joys and blessings he brought her way. She will be dearly missed.
Emmy passed away on February 20th, 2023. She was predeceased by her parents, Otto and Regina Stickel; her husband, Russell Kennedy; and her brother, Otto Stickel.
She is survived by her sons, Peter (Rose) Tovani, Gino (Christine) Kennedy and Adriano Kennedy; her goddaughter, Ada Bertucci; her grandchildren, Micheal, Danielle, Olivia, Ryan and Vincent; her great-grandchildren, Jackson and Katelyn; and her siblings, Elly, Anne (Fred), Christina, Helen (Henry), Elvira and Doris.
