Eric Thornton Fell
July 7th, 1944 ~ December 17th, 2007
It is with tremendous shock and sadness that the family and friends announce the sudden
passing of Eric Thornton Fell of Vernon. Eric was born in Cultus Lake, near Chilliwack, BC on July 7th, 1944. He spent his early years living with his family on the Army base there and later moved to Vancouver where he attended UBC graduating as a teacher who majored in Physical Education. He was a mentor and coach to students in Chetwynd, Dawson Creek, 100 Mile House and Williams Lake, BC. He also went on to become the school principal in some of these locations. Eric changed careers and worked for the Federal Gov’t in Employment Insurance (now Service Canada) until his retirement in 1997. During that time he also served in many roles within the union and served from 1994 to 1997 as the Nat’l Vice President C.E.I.U for BC/Yukon.
Eric was the youngest of three in his family and was predeceased by his father, Norman Fell in 1974 and by his loving mother, Anne Fell in 1998. He leaves behind his daughter, Irish Beth (Paul) Maddock of Calgary, AB, his son Liam Fell of Dawson Creek, his two granddaughters, Kathrine and Paige Smith, of Vernon, sister Roberta (Bobbie) Ayres, brother Jim (Jeannie), nieces and many devoted friends, particularly Gerry Poole, a long time friend to Eric for fifty years. Eric also leaves behind his devoted companion of over ten years, Grimace, (Wolfgang) the purebred husky dog, who was never not by his side. Eric was an avid and excellent golfer, curler and sportsman. He proudly went on to win too many trophies, titles and championship tournaments to count. Eric also had a huge heart for animals and has fought tirelessly for those who could not speak for themselves. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and was recently nominated and accepted a position on the Executive which he would be so proud to do on behalf of the veterans.
An informal open house “Celebration of Life” Service will be held for Eric on Saturday, December 22nd, 2007 from 1:00pm ~ 3:00pm at The Royal Canadian Legion in Vernon. Cremation to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations in Eric’s memory please be made to the Royal Canadian Legion or to the S.P.C.A. shelter for animals.
