Erika Dorothea Pipke

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful Mother, Omi, sister, aunt and friend, Erika Dorothea Pipke, peacefully the morning of October 12, 2009. She joins in death her beloved husband and best friend Arnie (1986) and leaves to mourn her loss her son Raynier Pipke (Cobble Hill), daughter DeeDee Bakker (Aldergrove) and her much cherished grandchildren, Lauren Turner, Eric and Nicole Bakker as well as Suzan Turner and Ron Bakker and family.

Mom was one of a large family of children growing up in WWII Germany and endured many hardships before escaping through the Iron Curtain and arriving in Canada. She is survived by her sisters Christel (Sigi) Rothe, Clara (Ernie) Carmer , brothers Horst (Mary) Trager and Emil (Ilse) Trager as well as her brothers and sisters-in –law, Otto (Marion) Pipke and Marge Pipke and many nieces and nephews.

Mom and Dad met shortly after Mom arrived in Vernon, while working at the Lotus Gardens Restaurant. Dad decided to give the “new girl” a hard time, so she gave him one right back in German. To her surprise, her future husband replied back in German and the rest is history! Mom always said it was “Love at first Fight”. Mom worked for many years at Delview Hospital, where she made many friends and in recent years she became involved in the St. Johns Ambulance Therapy Dog Program with her beloved Chihuahua “Hercules”. Many thanks to Joanne for looking after Hercules when it became too much for Mom.

Special thanks also to her “adopted” daughters Debby and Ingrid who brought such love and caring into her life. Many thanks to all her doctors and everyone from Interior Health who helped keep Mom living independently in the home she loved for so long. To all the staff at the Westridge Care Facility, thank you for making Mom’s final days ones filled with care and compassion.
