Erma Haberstock

(nee Unrau)

was born on May 13th, 1931 in Mayfair, Saskatchewan and passed away suddenly in the early hours of October 8th, 2013 at her residence in Vernon, B.C., after a long struggle with cancer and related complications.

Erma will be lovingly remembered by her husband Herman, to whom she was married for 60 years; one daughter, Linda (Tim) Sakamoto of Vernon, B.C.; two sons, Don (Tannyce) Haberstock of Vernon, B.C. and Brad (Valina) Haberstock of Kelowna, B.C.; her daughter-in-law, Heather Haberstock of Vernon, B.C.; six grandchildren, Garreth, Brooke, Amanda, Tyler (Tenille), Paige and Erin; two great-grandchildren, Ava and Andrew; two brothers, Robert (Bob) Unrau of Peachland, B.C. and Irvin (Darlene) Unrau of Edmonton, Alberta; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. She was preceded in death by one son, Dale Haberstock; her parents, David and Katherina Unrau; two brothers, Earl Unrau and an infant brother; and one sister, Marjorie Morphy.

Erma spent her early years in Mayfair, Saskatchewan and was introduced to her future husband, Herman by mutual friends in the summer of 1952. They were married in Saskatoon on June 20th, 1953 and just recently celebrated their 60th Diamond Wedding Anniversary in Vernon. Erma worked for the OK Economy Grocery Store in Saskatoon, then, after relocating to Vernon in 1957, Shop Easy and The Bay, until her fourth baby was born in 1972, at which time she became a full-time homemaker. She was a devoted wife, a wonderful, loving mother to her children, a kind and caring grandmother and a loyal friend. Erma spent the majority of her time with Herman and together they took care of their well manicured yard and garden, embarked upon relaxing road trips across the border in their motorhome and socialized at weekly bowling games with their friends. She had a passion for sewing and over the years she spent many hours sitting at her much loved Bernina sewing machine creating many beautiful items for her family. Erma will be fondly remembered as a kind and loving person by all who knew her and she will be greatly missed.

Erma was cremated as this was her request. A private family service took place at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery on Tuesday, October 15th, 2013 where she was laid to rest in her mother’s grave. Following the service the family gathered for a Reception in the Bethel Tea Room.

As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Erma to the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation 2101-32nd Street, Vernon, B.C. V1T 5L2.
