Born Evangeline Battye Bowyer-Smyth in London England on February 4th, 1904, “Curly” came to Canada with her parents and three brothers in 1912. After returning to Britain due to the First World War, they again immigrated to Canada in 1918 to settle in Canoe, B.C. In 1928 she married Jack Veale and raised five children on a farm on Okanagan Lake near Vernon. They farmed the 138 acres from 1931 until 1956 during which time she cooked for harvest field hands while holding down several outside-the-home jobs including fruit packer, fruit inspector and ladies wear sales clerk. Regardless of the heavy workload she was able to keep a warm and welcoming home for her friends and family. She was an avid gardener and loved to read and knit. She was fun. She baked and canned over many years for the family and worked hard in the early years just to keep bread on the table. Her focus in life was to enjoy her family and ensure they were provided for in the way of education and help where needed. She loved company and was especially fond of her own mother and step-father who lived next door for years, not to mention several of Dad’s Salmon Arm relatives whom they visited regularly. In 1956 they moved to Merritt to remove timber from the family homestead where they spent many happy times over the next forty years. In 1959 they opened the Merritt Sewing Centre which they operated for 9 years before returning to Vernon in the early seventies to their lakeshore home. In the capacity of co-owner of a guest ranch and president of a property holding company she spent the next 20 years commuting between Merritt and Vernon looking after her business needs. Curly was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for many years as well as the Nicola Valley Women’s Institute. During her years in Vernon she was a member of the Anglican and Pentecostal Churches. Upon her arrival in Merritt in 1956 she was a member of the local Anglican Church but during the latter years she attended the Merritt Full Gospel Tabernacle. Members of the Veale family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff and volunteers of Coquihalla-Gillis House in Merritt for their care of and the kindness to their mother during her latter years. May they also extend that appreciation to her many friends for their loving attention. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her family Joan, Doug, Nell and Bev, their families and all her many friends and relatives. A Memorial Service and Tea will be held Thursday, August 26th, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. at Full Gospel Tabernacle on Voght Street in Merritt. The Funeral Service will be held in Vernon at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 28th, 2004 at the Full Gospel Tabernacle on Okanagan Landing Road. Interment will follow in the family plot at Pleasant Valley Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Curly to the Coquihalla-Gillis House, 3451-Voght Street, Merritt, B.C. V1K 1C6. Funeral arrangements have been made with BETHEL FUNERAL CHAPEL LTD., 5605-27th Street, Vernon, B.C. V1T 8Z5 (1-250-542-1187).
