Fred O.
Mitchell July 9, 1925 – August 26, 2008
Born in Perthshire, Scotland, into a
family with two sisters, Fred Mitchell
gave up a career in the law to join the
British Army. He served in a number of
overseas postings including India before
coming to Canada. In 1953 he met his
wife, Eileen Kennaugh, while stationed
at Chilliwack, BC. Leaving the military
for country life, they moved to Armstrong
and purchased Abercraig Farm in 1957.
An avid reader, known for his general
curiosity, keen interest in farming, nose
for politics and current affairs, Fred was
always up for a discussion and quick to
lend a helping hand. The farm door was
ever open as were their hearts. Fred was
forced to leave Abercraig Farm because
of back trouble in the early 2000s, fi nally
settling at Pleasant Valley Manor in
Armstrong. His wife Eileen moved from
the farm into Armstrong in 2005 and
predeceased him in May 2007. Always
keen to understand and persevere, his
watchword remains, ‘bash on regardless’.
A memorial tea will be held 1:00 p.m.,
Sunday, September 7, 2008 at Mountain
View Chapel, Armstrong, for those who
wish to celebrate his friendship.
