Freda Elizabeth passed away peacefully at Noric House in Vernon on September 22, 2003 at the age of 83. She will be lovingly remembered by her sister Lee, (Carl), five grandchildren: daughters Mary-Lee and Janice; sons Robert (Viki), Michael (Donna) and John (Ruth); seven grandchildren, Robert Karin (Derek), Lara, Clayton, Xenia, Joshua and Charlotte and numerous nieces and nephews. Freda was born in Edmonton and as a young adult was an accomplished painter and violinist; she maintained her love of music for the rest of her life. After her marriage in 1948, the family moved frequently and at various times resided in Penticton, Terrace, Vancouver, Hudson Bay, Nakusp, Mica Creek, Gibsons Landing and Vernon. Freda worked numerous years with Columbia Cellulose in Terrace and BC Hydro in Nakusp and Mica Creek. She ended he working career as a real estate agent in Vernon. She always prided herself in being a hard and dedicated worker and went to great lengths to instill the same virtues in her children. Freda was strong, independent and had amazing spirit and intestinal fortitude. From 1966 onwards, she became the sole provider for the family. She was always proud, and rightfully so, that her five children received university educations despite facing numerous hardships. Throughout her life the children remained her main preoccupation. Freda loved family and friends, her flowers and trips to Reno and the local casino. She had great compassion for the elderly and for stray animals. She was always up for a good card game and walked and swam every day until age 80. No day was complete without doing a cross word and watching Jeopardy. In the past three years, she had been slowed by a broken hip and a stroke, but despite this, maintained her sense of humour and staunch resolve until the end. She is loved and will be missed by all. The family would like to thank the staff of Noric House for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Vernon Chapter of the SPCA. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. James Catholic Church, Vernon, BC, on Saturday September 27, 2003, at 11:00 A.M. Reverend Father Martin Peyton celebrant. Cremation. Arrangements are in the care of Coates Personal Alternative Funeral Service 558-0866.
