Geoffrey Arthur Hayman

Geoffrey Arthur Hayman

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden death of Geoffrey Arthur Hayman at his home in Vernon, British Columbia on July 14, 2010 at the age of 65 years.

Geoff was born and raised in Windsor, Ontario and, after receiving a B.Sc. from the University of Windsor, taught high school in Amherstburg, Kingsville, Schrieber and Sault Ste Marie Ontario. While in the Sault, Geoff completed his M.Ed in Guidance and Counseling at The University of Toronto.

After teaching for thirteen years, Geoff returned to the University of Windsor and completed his LL.B. This career change was the perfect opportunity to head west. Geoff chose to Article in Vernon at Davidson and Company. He then practiced law in Kelowna at Porter & Boon. The plan was to practice law, but Geoff loved teaching and agreed to take on an evening Law class at Okanagan College. That decision lead to a twenty-five year career teaching Law, Science and Mathematics to Adult Basic Education students at the Kalamalka Campus. Geoff appreciated the courage and sacrifices made by those students determined to improve their position in life. The most rewarding aspect of this process was when Geoff would meet former students who had reached their goals. He was proud of their achievement. His years at Okanagan College were enriched by the staff he worked with and the students he felt privileged to teach.

Geoff was an avid model railroad enthusiast and member of the North Okanagan Model Railroad Association. He enjoyed “chasing” and photographing trains and participating in NOMRA activities. Geoff valued the friendships he developed through his hobby. He also shared his love of trains with his grandson, Maxwell.

Geoff placed his family at the top of his priority list and was a loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather. He will always be in the hearts of his wife Jan, children “Gary” David Edgar, Alison (Richard Kicksee), Gregory, Karen (Mark Sprague), grandchildren Maxwell and Elizabeth Kicksee, brother David (Mary Ann) Hayman, Sault Ste Marie Ont., sister Mary Lou (Jim) Coffey, Chesley Ont., and Brother-in-law Edgar Arthur Hayman, Victoria BC.

Donations in Geoff’s memory may be made to the Okanagan College Foundation – Geoff Hayman Fund, established to assist students who are returning to school to upgrade their academic skills.

A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at 2 pm in the Vernon Campus Okanagan College Cafeteria.
