My dad was a man who liked to have everything in order. Everything planned and logical. To that end, it's not surprising that he wrote his own obituary, and asked me to submit it for publishing upon his demise. I am honouring that request and adding this addendum. Dad is survived by his wife Vera of Chemainus. Doug & Maureen Smart of Kamloops. Sydney (Bryan) Town of Logan Lake. Lindsay Smart of Melborne Australia. And, great granddaughter Scout Town of Logan Lake).
In his own words....
George was the son of George Bremner Smart, a butcher from Fraserburgh, Scotland and Beatrice Elizabeth Smart(Fogg) from Winnipeg. He was born in Courtenay and during his High School summer holidays be worked as a Whistle Punk in a logging operation.
On graduating from High School be joined the army and spent two years overseas with the Artillery in Britain, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. After the war he returned to logging and became a High Rigger and then for many years he was Manager of the Logging Division. In 1947 he married Gloria McLaren who was the love of his life for 48 wonderful years. In 1950 their son Doug was born. He married Maureen Murphy and they raised two beautiful daughters, Sydney and Lindsay, who both attended University. In 1995 he was devastated by the loss of Gloria to Alzhiemers. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Charles and Maurice and one sister, Betty. In 1999 be married an old friend Vera and they spent many wonderful years together. Bert and Vera Beggs were their best friends and neighbours for many years and when they were married in Honolulu in 1968 , George and Gloria stood up with them.
Due to back problems George has spent many years on his Scooter and every morning, weather permitting, used it on the Golf Course playing for five cents a hole. Every afternoon he and his little dog Suzie took a Scooter trip around Chemainus.
