Geraldine Louise Strother
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing, on June 3, 2013, of Geraldine Louise Strother. A life long Okanagan resident, Gerry was born in Rutland in 1934 and lived for the past 55 years in Vernon.. She is survived by her two sons, Jim (Sandi) of Nelson, and Peter (Marylou) of Vernon, five grandchildren, Riley and Ivy of Vernon, and Gryphon, Thomas and Rowan of Nelson, two sisters, Dorothy Dohan of Victoria, and Kay Geen of Kelowna, and her brother Jim Gray of Kelowna. Gerry was predeceased by her husband Art, her parents Arthur and Nancy Gray of Rutland and three sisters, Alma Gray, Shirley Stewart (Kelowna) and Carol Freeman (Penticton).
We will miss her generosity, abundant energy and kindness. She seemed always to be doing something for someone else. She never forgot a birthday, or missed an opportunity to visit (and feed) her many relatives and friends. Her work as a nurse for many years in the Vernon Jubilee Hospital earned her the respect and friendship of many people, both those who worked alongside of her and those who were lucky enough to have been in her care.
We will also greatly miss her sparkle, her zest for life and her sense of humour. Everyone she knew must have many memories of her quick wit, and of sharing a laugh or two. She retained this sense of humour through difficult times and illness.
A passion for the outdoors and for her gardens was also a great part of who she was. She spent many hours hiking in the hills above her home on Okanagan Lake. She was always the one with the best goodies in her pack, and who took the most photographs. She loved to swim in the lake in summer, and enjoyed picking flowers from her gardens and making them into bouquets, most often to give to others. We were not allowed to leave her home without flowers and food! For ‘Minny’, they were an endlessly flowing expression of her love, of the great and beautiful spirit which dwelled within a tiny, dear, sweet, unforgettable lady.
Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, JULY 30, 2013 from 3 – 7 PM at Okanagan Landing Community Hall, 7801 Okanagan Landing Road, Vernon
