GERARD THIESSEN

Gerard T. Thiessen

1904 – 2002

Gerard T. Thiessen was born Dec. 23, 1904 to Gerhard and Katherine Toews Thiessen at Rosenort, Manitoba. He left us for his eternal reward on Dec. 9, 2002, just 2 weeks short of his 98th birthday.

Dad received his education and grew up to manhood on the family farm in the Rosenort area. At the age of 16 he gave his heart to the Lord and was baptized into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite. This Faith was a rock and source of strength for his entire life.

As a young man Dad answered the call to “go west” and spent a few years in the Linden, Alberta area before homesteading at Crooked Creek, Alberta in the Peace River Country in 1930. In 1932 he married Minnie Shartner at Linden, Alberta. They shared over 70 years together, raising their family, serving the Church and community with their generous spirit.

Dad was first and foremost a farmer and engaged in this occupation until 1965 when Him and Mother moved to Armstrong, BC. There he continued farming as well as carpentry which he truly enjoyed. In 1978 they retired to Enderby, BC where they lived until 1992 when they returned to their homestead country, moving into Ridgevalley Home where he resided until his death.

Dad’s outgoing personality and enthusiasm for life won him many friends who remember his short stature and quick walk. He loved singing and many people remember his voice in Church or as he worked.

Their home was always open to the various personal and material needs of the community, which added an extra dimension to our lives including Pamela, who came to us at age two.

Left with precious memories are his wife Minnie, children Lorne and wife Josie, Crooked Creek, AB, Melvin and wife Lena, Grande Prairie, AB, Eva and husband Willard Toews, Crooked Creek, AB, Percy and wife Eunice, Armstrong, BC and Pamela and husband Jake Barkman of Abbotsford, BC, 29 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister Dora Goossen of Steinbach, Manitoba and one sister-in-law Margaret Thiessen of Rosenort, Manitoba.

Preceding him in death are his parents, 5 brothers and 4 sisters.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, December 13, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. from the Church of God In Christ Mennonite, Ridgevalley, Alberta. Interment to follow in the Rosedale Mennonite Cemetery.
