Gertrude Catherine Nelson

Gertrude Catherine Nelson, born on March 4th, 1917, passed away at Polson North Extended Care on January 31st, 2008. Gertrude was born and raised on the homestead farm in Didsbury, Alberta, the youngest daughter of Hugh and Catherine McLean. It was here also that she met and married her husband, Clifford Nelson, and together they lived and worked (mostly farming) in various places in Alberta and B.C. They first moved to Vernon in 1957 and left this area in 1972. Gertrude returned to Vernon in 2004 to be closer to family. She had been a member of the Women’s Institute for many years. During her teen years she joined the Didsbury Women’s Institute and then continued her membership with the local W. I. wherever she lived. Gertrude was a member until she was in her mid 80’s. Gertrude was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Clifford, in 2003, sisters: Christina Gatherole in 1991, Sadie Nelson in 1985, three brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law. She is survived by two daughters: June (Jonn) Gentray of Surrey, B.C., Donna (Joseph) Ezsol of Vernon, B.C., four grandchildren: Russil (Brenda) Ramsey of High Level, Alberta, Carmen Gentray of Surrey, B.C., Carla (Andy) Rooker of Maple Ridge, B.C., Linda (Ian) Boyd of Vernon, B.C., great-grandchildren: Nick, John, Keilen, Tyler, Sarah and Brendan, as well as one brother-in-law of Calgary, Alberta. The family wishes to extend their gratitude for the wonderful care Mom received during her last 2½ year’s stay at Polson North Extended Care Home and for her care by Dr. Borchert over the past 4 years. At Gertrude’s request there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to do so may send donations to a charity of their choice.
