The family of Gertrude (Gertie) Florence Glen wishes to announce the passing of their dear mother and grandmother on August 26, 2009 in her 91st year.
Gertie was born September 20, 1918 in Fielding, Sask., youngest daughter of Lawrence and Florence Stott, having four brothers and four sisters.
Her parents immigrated to Canada from Peterborough, England and her father was a harness maker and later operated a retail store in Fielding.
After high school graduation, Gertie married Jack Glen in 1939 and living in Radisson, Sask, they had three children, Barbara Florence Wilkinson, now deceased, Jaqueline Easy of Olds, AB and Randy Glen of Armstrong.
In 1952 Jack and Gertie moved from Saskatchewan to Kelowna, moving on to Salmon Arm in 1956 and operated Glens Variety and Sport Centre until their retirement in 1974. Nine years later they moved to Armstrong where they lived until the present time.
Gertie was active in sports of all kinds including curling, bowling, golf and lawn bowling as well as many hobbies including sewing and knitting. She was an active member of the Eastern Star and volunteered with the Armstrong Seniors Activity Centre, the local Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store and was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Armstrong. Gertie loved her flowers, houseplants and working outside.
Gertie was pre-deceased by her husband Jack and is survived by her daughter Jacki Easy, son Randy Glen, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held September 19, 2009 at 1:00 pm at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Armstrong with Rev. Wendy Adams officiating. A reception will follow at St. Andrew’s.
The family would like to extend their deep gratitude to the doctors, nurses and support staff at Vernon Jubilee Hospital as well as Vernon’s Hospice House.
