Gladys Sylvia Matejka
1927 – 2014
It is with great love and sadness that we share the loss of Gladys “Sylvia” Matejka; our loving Mom and Grandma passed away peacefully April 1, 2014. Her inner strength, love of family, and curiosity of life will be missed by us all.
Sylvia was born near Windsor, England on September 10, 1927 and trained as a District (Registered) Nurse and Midwife, thoroughly enjoying “her” nursing profession.
Immigrating to Canada in 1952 and often saying that moving to Canada was the best decision of her life, Sylvia settled in central Alberta where she met the love of her life “Charlie”. They were married on December 10, 1955.
In 1961 they ventured west and moved to Enderby where Sylvia, in an effort to support the purchase of their new hardware business, continued as an RN, worked after hospital hours in the hardware as well as Vernon news. She was a School Trustee and the first female councillor for the City of Enderby. Both tasks were taken very seriously and we are proud knowing how hard she worked in representing the students and constituents. Together Sylvia and Charlie were active in many of Enderby’s organizations: The Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, and the downtown revitalization project were but a few. During their business life, Charles and Sylvia were the owners of Central Hardware and Enderby Jewellers.
In retirement, there were years of companionship and travel; after Charles’ passing in 2004, Sylvia moved to Kelowna, living in her own apartment within Jane and David’s home. Together Charles and Sylvia had two children: Jane (David) and Colin (Gail); and three grandchildren: Brock (Brittany), Braden (Caitlin), and Taylor.
Sylvia found great peace strolling along the Riverwalk and at her request of no funeral/memorial service or flowers, donations may be made at the Enderby and District Financial (Credit Union) “Sylvia Matejka – Riverwalk Beautification”. The family will dedicate seating area for all the community to enjoy. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family at www.MyAlternatives.ca
