Gustav Hermann (Gus) Columbus

was called Home to be with his Lord on Monday, January 26th, 2015 at the age of 86 years.

Gus will be lovingly remembered by his wife Kate, to whom he was married for 64 years; and their children, Charles (Carol), Ed (Juli), Marg (Tim), Liz (Rainer), Marilyn and Gordon (Monica); eleven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; one brother, Alfred (Deanna); and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was preceded in death by one brother and five sisters.

Gus was born on March 21st, 1928 in Kutten, Kreis Angerburg, Poland. He married Katharina Lamb on September 2nd, 1950 and in May, 1951 they left Germany and came to Canada to start a new and better life for themselves here. Gus was an accomplished mason and became the Manager of OK Builders Masonry, a position he held for 27 years. He loved the outdoors and spent much time going on fishing excursions and appreciating nature. Gus and Kate always enjoyed travelling and they went on many trips to various places in the world. Above all else, Gus loved his Lord and his family. He was an active member of the church he attended and served in various capacities within that church over the years. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather who was always an excellent provider for his family. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Those wishing to pay their last respects to Gus can attend a viewing at Bethel Funeral Chapel on Friday, January 30th, 2015 from 7:00 – 8:00 P.M. A private family Graveside Service at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery will be held prior to the Celebration of Life Service, which will take place at Okanagan Landing Community Church, 5871 Okanagan Landing Road, on Saturday, January 31st, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. with light refreshments to follow. Pastor Rainer Mittelstaedt will be officiating.

A special heartfelt thank you is extended from the Columbus family to Dr. Gilhooly, all the other Physicians as well as the many care-givers from Interior Health and the North Okanagan Hospice who looked after Gus. The family is also so grateful to the First Responders and Paramedics who so many times came to the Columbus residence to be of such comfort and assistance to Gus when he was in need.
