Hedwig Gschwendner, a longtime resident of Lumby, passed away peacefully at Vernon Jubilee Hospital on January 5, 2003. She was born in Bruno, Saskatchewan on January 26, 1916 and just recently celebrated her 87th birthday with her family. She was predeceased by her husband George in 1982, her daughter Mary Ann and her son Walter, five brothers and five sisters. Hedwig will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Marie (Les) Bell of Lumby, four grandchildren, Kathleen Bell of Lumby, Marianne (James Postill) Bell of Lumby, John Bell of Kelowna, James Bell of Victoria; two great granddaughters Sierra Marie Bell-Postill and Amber Rose Bell-Postill; one sister Sophie Schatten of Lethbridge, Alberta and one sister-in-law Aggie Lummerding of Bruno, Saskatchewan and several nieces, nephews and extended family. Hedwig was a wonderfully caring and loving woman. Her faith was very important to her and she was a dedicated member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lumby, and was pleased that she could attend the recent Christmas Service. She spent many hours involved with the Catholic Women’s League and the Women’s Institute and was a lifetime member of both organizations. Hedwig was also a member of the Old Age Pensioners. She was very involved with her family, and a devoted grandmother. She spent many hours with her grandchildren as they were growing up, even learning to swim in her late 60’s so she could spend time with them at the pool. Although she herself had many hardships growing up, she was often heard to say that she was a lucky woman to have family around her. Prayers will be said on Monday February 10, 2003 at 6:00p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday February 11, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. with Father O’Reilly celebrant. Burial will take place in Lumby Cemetery. A reception will follow in the Church Hall. Those wishing to make memorial contributions may do so to the charity of one’s choice.
