It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Helen Margaret Eldridge at the
age of 91. She slipped away peacefully on
the morning of October 31st, 2006 at the
Vernon Jubilee Hospital, Polson North wing.
Helen was born in Calgary on March 28, 1915 to Richard & Maude Conn. She and her brother, Dick, grew up in and around Calgary and Pincher Creek where at a young age, Helen showed an adventuresome spirit; enjoying an outdoor lifestyle of camping and hiking around the Kananaskis, Banff and, Pincher Creek areas. It was during an
evening of skating at the Calgary Tennis Club that she met the young man who would become her husband, attracting his attention by shouting “Hey you!” across the ice. He was hooked and Helen and Harold were married in 1938. A few years later, they settled onto the farm west of Calgary that would become home for the next 56 years. Helen and
her husband made adventure part of their life, taking many trips in
their motor home around North America and touring places like
New Zealand, Europe and the Holy Land. Helen always had a kind
and nurturing spirit. While she and Harold were still courting, Helen entered Nursing School and earned her diploma in 1937. Throughout her life she lovingly adopted the roll of caregiver whenever those around her were in need. This trait followed her right to the end as she still tried to help administer care to others at the VJH Polson North wing, shuffling up to them in her wheel chair, patting the backs of their hands in a loving fashion and asking “Are you OK?”
Helen has traveled on to the next level to be with her pre-deceased husband Harold, her brother Dick, her son Richard, sister-in-law Nancy, and son-in-laws Jim Van Arnam and Irv Nixon. Helen is survived by her daughters Sue Nixon and Cathy Van Arnam while leaving behind eight Grandchildren and fifteen Great Grandchildren to continue her legacy and remember her kindness and caring.
