Helen Gertrude Way
Born in Deer Park, Wisconsin on February 9, 1919, passed away in Vernon on January 15, 2014, 3 weeks shy of her 95th birthday.
Helen was predeceased by her parents Emil and Elsie Kobernick, all 7 of her siblings and by her first husband, Fred Laughlin, and her second husband, Jack Way. Survived by her daughter Marion (Bob) Stephenson of Keremeos, her daughter Lorraine (Barry) Woodroff of Vernon, and her son Jim (Jo-Anne) Laughlin of Blind Bay. Helen is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren, for a grand total of 53 descendents.
After losing her mother to tuberculosis in 1929, the Kobernick family moved to Saskatchewan where they homesteaded north of North Battleford. It was there in 1938 that Helen married Fred Laughlin, one of the neighbour boys, and the newlyweds continued farming for a few years. But these were not easy times on the Prairies so in 1947, Fred, Helen and their two girls pulled up roots and moved to Vernon in search of a better life. And as they say, the rest is history.
Our family extends a special and very sincere thank you to the staff of the Fintry North Wing of the Polson Extended Care Home. These professionals were always caring, kind and sensitive to Mom’s needs when it mattered most during her stay. It takes a special type of person to care for our seniors and these folks are absolutely the best!
An informal celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, January 21st at 2:00 PM in the Tea Room of the Pleasant Valley Chapel in Vernon. In lieu of flowers, please make an appropriate donation to the Salvation Army or the charity of your choice.
Arrangements are in the care of Vernon Funeral Home 250-542-0155.
