VAN DER STAR
HENDRIKA (RICKY) HELENA VAN DER STAR (nee van der Veek) passed away peacefully at Pleasant Valley Manor on Saturday, February 22, 2003. Born September 7, 1926 in Lisse, Netherlands, she immigrated to Canada in November 1951 with her new husband, Johannes (John). She has been a resident of Armstrong, BC since settling here in 1952. During the past 50 years she was an active member of the Catholic women’s League (for over 25 years), the local Canadian Red Cross Society, and the Armstrong Garden Club. She was active in the community volunteering for the Armstrong Wheels to meals program. Hendrika and John enjoyed gardening and loved flowers and together they operated Star Nurseries for many years until retiring. She was always up to challenges and was most recently remembered for starting to use a computer at age 70. She was often used as an example at the Okanagan University College, where she took computer classes, of how it was never to late to learn how to use a computer. Her family here and in the Netherlands appreciated Oma’s computer and Internet skills by remaining in contact via email. Predeceased by her husband in 1991, Hendrika will be lovingly remembered by her three sons and daughter, Jack (Kathy), Diane (Jimmy) Brown, Ben (Karen) and Richard (Berni), and by her 10 grandchildren. Hendrika will also be remembered by Klien Oma, her brothers and sisters and their families in Canada, the Netherlands and abroad. Her children wish to express their great appreciation for the support provided by her friends, the staff of Pleasant Valley Manor, and the ALS Society during the last years of her life. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Hendrika Van der Star to the ALS Society of Canada, 119 – 1600 West 6th Ave., Vancouver, BC, V6J 1R3, 1-800-708-3228.
