May 28, 1945 - April 24, 2020
The family of Henry Huizinga sadly announces his passing on April 24/2020 to be with his Lord and Savior. He lost his brave fight with cancer at home, on a warm spring day surrounded by his family.
Henry was born in the Netherlands on May 28, 1945 in the rural town of Marum. He and his family immigrated shortly after the war in search of a better life in Canada. He was raised on a Dairy farm in Wellandport Ontario where he spent his childhood years with his many brothers and sisters on the banks of the Niagara river. It was in this time that Henry developed a lifelong devotion to the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Hamilton Tigercats. His eternal optimism to these teams remains a mystery to this day.
Henry met the love of his life Cathy in Ontario in 1969, and they married a year later. They had 3 children and were the only family members adventurous enough to venture west to start a new life in the Okanagan. Henry was a farmer at heart, and farmed in many capacities throughout his life. He grew up on a Dairy farm, had his own pig and broiler chicken farms, and even tried his hand at being a cowboy on a cattle ranch for a few years in the early 80's when times were tough. Along with farming, he was a farm machinery salesman, always more concerned about the service than the sale. Henry made lifelong friends wherever he went, his kind and gentle demeanour never went unnoticed.
In their retirement years, Henry and Cathy spent most of their time in Vernon on their small ranch, where Henry was able to continue farming in a smaller, relaxed fashion. They spent their winters in Palm Desert, golfing and enjoying the desert sun with their friends.
Henry is survived by his loving wife Cathy of 49 years, his children Jack (Victoria), Christine, and Dennis (Heather) and his many grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held at the family ranch at a later date when we can once again have a large crowd and make a lot of noise
