Mike, 81, died suddenly and unexpectedly but peacefully on January 25, 2020 at his home on his beautiful acreage in Vernon, B.C.
He leaves behind his children who he loved and enjoyed so much, Duane Gottlieb and Sherry Mahoney (with husband Jon), Duane's adult daughters Bailey and Jessie, and Sherry's two adult sons, Braden and Jordan, all of whom he loved and enjoyed as well.
Mike, the son of Herman and Maria Gottlieb, was born in Boggy Creek, Manitoba in 1938 on the land Herman and Maria homesteaded after emigrating from Germany. Mike was one of eight children in the family: Theresa Baumung, Marie Mohr, Carl (survived by his widow, Margaret Gottlieb), Joseph (deceased shortly after birth), James Gottlieb (Agnes Chelbek), Alfred Gottlieb (deceased), and David Gottlieb. Mike is also survived by many nieces, great-nieces, nephews, and great-nephews.
Family was so important to Mike. Mike's children and grandchildren were always in his heart and mind. Duane and Sherry were everything to him. Mike often expressed that he was so fortunate to also have such a close and loving relationship with his brothers and sisters and their children. On many occasions, he would bring his family together with his large boat and motor to the Roblin, Manitoba area, all the way from the west coast, to visit and have fun with his brothers, sisters, and their children. Mike also hosted an enormous family reunion in Vernon! He always made time for family.
Mike left his home in Roblin at the age of 18, heading west to B.C., a place he has always loved. He soon joined the Canadian Air Force, and afterwards spent time with B.C. Hydro on the coast, and then in Vernon. However, more than anything, Mike was an entrepreneur and businessman. He loved his business dealings, which were widely varied as he moved from one venture to another. There was never a shortage of energy and enthusiasm.
In addition, Mike loved his toys! He had backhoes, caterpillars, tractors, log splitters, chainsaws, boats, snowmobiles, and so many other pieces of machinery and tools, and in many cases more than one of each! He not only knew how to use them effectively but he knew how to repair each of them!
Mike's family, extended family, and many friends who loved his friendship and humor will miss him dearly, and though we grieve our loss, we recognize that this wonderful man led a rich and fulfilling life.
