With much sadness we announce the passing of Hermann Cordes on October 13th, 2014. Hermann was born in Groningen, The Netherlands on February 27th, 1936, the son of Harm Albert Cordes and Alida Johanna Charlotte Schaaf. As a young child, Hermann experienced the Second World War. The Canadian army, which liberated the north of The Netherlands in 1945, made a deep impression on him.
Hermann immigrated to Canada at the age of 22. (At that time it seemed as if the family he had left behind would never see him again, but thanks to air travel all the Dutch families were able to visit Hermann and he to visit them.) Hermann wanted land and space and a place to rear chickens. He found that space in Lumby on Whitevale Road where he built his four acre homestead by himself in the early 1960’s and where he lived for almost fifty years. As well as working his land, he was employed for many years as Custodian by School District #22.
This kind and gentle man was known as “Gramps”, “Dad Hermann”, “Uncle Hermann” or “Hermann”, and liked by all for his big smile and sense of humor. You knew he was about town when you saw his blue Volkswagon truck.
Hermann will be lovingly rememembered and sorely missed by: two daughters, Allana (Silvio) Diotalevi of Lumby, and Melody Young of Lake Country; one son, Lawrence (Sue) Knowles of Langley; seven grandchildren: Cole (Tara), Trina (Craige), Tanya (Clayton), Gina (Scott), Michael (Iris), Jacquelin, Kayla (Jake); seven great grandchildren; brothers, Siebe and Hans and his sister, Marchien, all of whom live with their spouses in The Netherlands. Hermann was predeceased by his parents; first wife, Becky and later, his second wife (our mother), Rita Cordes.
Sincerest “Thanks” goes out to all the wonderful and caring staff at Monashee Mews who gave Hermann tender loving care throughout his stay.
Flowers gratefully declined. Those wishing to make memorial contributions in memory of Hermann may do so to Parkinson Society British Columbia, 600, 890 West Pender Street, Vancouver, B. C. V6C 1J9.
The Celebration of Life for Herman will be held on Saturday, October 25th, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Pleasant Valley Funeral Home. A reception will follow in the tea room.
