Hielkje Yonkman

Hielkje Y1o9n1k4m-a2n 0(0L8uinenburg) Hielkje Yonkman (Luinenburg) was born to Lieuwe and Rinske Folkertsma Luinenburg,

Sept. 23, 1914, at Katlijk, Friesland. She passed away peacefully on the evening of August 6,

2008, at Parkview Place, Enderby.

Mom grew up in Friesland, Holland, of which she had good memories. Learning came

easy, and she enjoyed to go to school and Sunday school. She especially enjoyed the annual

Christmas programs. She also remembered going to church with her grandparents, riding in a

glass-windowed horse drawn coach! Early in life she decided to walk the Christian pathway.

Her faith in Jesus never wavered, sustaining her till the end.

At the age of 15 she went to live with her widowed grandmother until her passing

away 5 years later. On May 5, 1938, Mom married Engbert Yonkman at Koudam, Friesland.

Believing that Canada held a better future for their growing family of six children, they decided

to immigrate in 1953, a move mom never regretted. She faithfully stood beside Dad through the

many hard times, including the loss of their belongings in a house fifi re in 1955. She always tried

to see the better side and lived unselfifi shly for her family. After Dad passed away in 1994, Mom

bravely carried on. Her quick wit, sense of humour and faith always helped her get along as she

grew older.

Left to cherish fond memories are her children – Art (Sharron), Cranbrook, BC, – Louis

(Pat), Armstrong, BC, – Ralph, Deep Creek, BC, – Margaret (Ray) Loetkeman, Creston, BC, Rita
