Born January 4, 1926, Hiltje Jorna nee Kleistra, better known as Hilda, peacefully departed on a bright May 3rd, 2009. She was attended by her daughter Veronica and spouse Gary Lawrence, her sons Jeffrey (Gina) and Andrew. Son Hawerht, daughter Judy Livingston (John Stuart), Hilda’s sister Peggy Jonker, Hilda’s daughter-in-law Gina and Hilda’s close friends were there for her in the final few days.
She also leaves behind grandchildren James (Jessica) Livingston, Haley (Jon) Reed, Rob (Sara) Livingston, Ashley Livingston and Linny Livingston and great-grandchildren Izzac, Echo, Clay and Tamara.
Hilda was predeceased by her husband Bouwe (Bob) 20 years ago and her brothers Andries and Aaldert.
Hilda and Bob immigrated to God’s Country (their words for Canada and specifically British Columbia) from their native Friesland, the Netherlands in 1953. They arrived in Salmon Arm, where the Canadian government had a farm position waiting for Dad. Mom found work as a nursing aide in Salmon Arm General Hospital. With the arrival of children, Hilda became a full-time homemaker. Later, they settled in Coldstream, where Dad was a volunteer firefighter and a respected mechanic in his own shop. Hilda was renowned for her conversation, craft skills, baking, long walks and long drives. Besides her family, her loves were her weekly coffee group, the Coldstream Women’s Institute, and bus trips to Reno with her sister.
We will miss her chicken soup with meatballs, boeterkoek, and her sugar bread. We can still taste them.
Many thanks to Gateby Level 2 staff members and Doctor Long for their genuine and professional care, especially in her final days.
Hilda’s family invite her friends and old neighbours to join them for light refreshments at Paddlewheel Park Hall, 7813 Okanagan Landing Road on Friday, May 15, 2009 from 1 to 3:30 pm for a celebration of life.
