Howard was born on January 29, 1923 to Charles Elsworth and Edna Griffin Rittenhouse in Deer Park, Washington. He was the youngest of two brothers, Ray and Swede, both of whom preceded him in death. In his growing years, the five family members formed a band that played evenings at clubs and social gatherings throughout Washington State. Stories were told about Howard at a young age, the trumpet player in the band, being smuggled in the club to avoid being singled out as a young lad breaking curfew.
Howard and Lottie and family made their homes in Washington State (Tacoma and Spokane) before immigrating to Canada in 1975. Howard worked in the mining and lumber industries before retiring to enjoy family trips, fishing and exploring the mountains and lakes in Canada.
Howard was proud of the fact that he maintained a current driving licence to his death and was recognized in his 90th year for having a perfect unblemished driving record.
Interment was held in Republic,Washington and now Howard and Lottie are together again.
