Howard Russel Grigg

Harold Russel Grigg

October 26, 1914 – October 6, 2009

Harold was born in Belbeck, Saskatchewan on Oct. 26, 1914. He lived with his parents, 2 brothers and 3 sisters on their grain farm near Archiedale, Saskatchewan. As a boy, he had to stay home from school and help during harvest time so he was always late starting school when they returned to Moosejaw for the winter. He consequently needed to catch up but really enjoyed school and seemed to be able to manage. When the war started, Harold joined the air force and during his training time met Laurie in Regina, Saskatchewan. They were married in 1941. After his training in Morse Code, they moved to the Royal Canadian Air Force communications station at Bella Bella, BC. After the war, Harold attended the University of Saskatchewan, where he achieved his Bachelors Degree in Science. He, with Laurie and the two children, then moved back to the family farm. Later, deciding to return to university to continue his education, Harold and his family went to Saskatoon and later Vancouver to achieve his PhD in Physics. He worked as a Professor of Physics for many years at Royal Roads Military College in Victoria, BC. Harold loved to read and kept up to date with all the world news and politics from his newspapers and TV news. He also loved to read about ancient history, most non-fiction topics, and poetry. His interest in the English language kept his children all speaking correctly and checking words in the dictionary. In 2002, Harold and Laurie moved to Vernon, BC to be closer to daughter Penny and her family. With help from Penny and Lowell, and the wonderful help of their care givers, he and Laurie were able to remain living in their own home.

Harold was predeceased by his wife, Laurie, in 2007; his brothers, Allan Grigg and Neil Grigg; and sister, Irene (Kearns). He is fondly remembered by his daughter, Penny (Lowell) Laidlaw; son, Martin (Sue) Grigg; grandchildren: Christy (Manfred), Lorin (Cassie), Cam (Rhonda), Theresa (Anthony), and Trevor; great grandchildren: Keanu, Emma, Reiss, Rory and Ryan; siblings, Evie (Bergen) and Dorie (Whittaker); numerous nieces, nephews and special friends.

Our thanks to his special health care workers: Carolyn, Barb, Darlene, and Kimberly, Dr. Lindsay Pritchett and his staff, the staff at Vernon Jubilee Hospital ER and Three East, and Vernon Hospice House.
