On November 23, 2002, Howard Daniel Witwer passed away at Vernon Jubilee Hospital, at the age of 82 years. He is survived by his wife, Joyce, and daughter Gail (Bill) here in Vernon; brother La Vern (ClaraBelle) of Red Deer, and numerous nieces and nephews. Howard was predeceased by granddaughter Kathy in 1992. Howard was born in Acme, Alberta. He joined the RCAF in 1943 and went overseas in 1944, piloting Lancaster bombers until a mid-air collision over Germany occurred. Howard was the sole survivor and was a P.O.W. for nine months. Following his return to Canada and a few years as a civilian, Howard rejoined the RCAF in peacetime, becoming a flight engineer. He retired from the RCAF in 1968. He and his family moved to Vernon in 1989, and Howard joined the #899 Wing of the Airforce Association here. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, November 27, at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Pleasant Valley Funeral Home, with Padre Brian Jackson officiating. In lieu of flowers, friends wishing to do so may make donations in memory of Howard to either the Baerg-McMurtry Cancer Clinic at Vernon Jubilee Hospital, 2101-32 St., Vernon, V1T 5L2, or to the B.C.
